Abstract

Bangladesh came into being following more than two decades of political struggle culminating in the war of independence in 1971. This struggle was inspired by a vision forrna democratic, non-communal, prosperous, and equitable society. After 15 years of parliamentary democracy, it is reasonable to take stock of the country’s achievements sornfar, and more importantly, of what the country should accomplish in the next 15 years, which will take us to the 50th anniversary of our independence. By that time therngeneration, which was 18 years of age at the time of independence in 1971, would be approaching the completion of their working lives. It will be natural to ask what therncountry will have achieved over the full working life of a generation. Where will the country be? What would it look like?
