Abstract

Price hike of essential commodities has been one of the major challenges facing thernincumbent Caretaker Government (CTG) of Bangladesh. Figure 1.1 evince that therneconomy has been experiencing a creeping inflation over the recent past. Two mostrndistinctive features of this inflationary trend had been the following: (i) increase in foodrnprices had been more than that of non-food prices, and (ii) consumer price index wasrnhigher in the rural areas than in the urban counterparts. These trends had adversernimplications particularly for the poorest segments of the society, given that there has notrnbeen any tangible increase in their real income
