CPTPP and Beyond: Multilateralism in an era of great power strategic competition

EABER participated in an online symposium titled “CPTPP and Beyond: Multilateralism in an Era of Great Power Strategic Competition.” The symposium explored how regional agreements can facilitate multilateralism in the context of the strategic competition between China and the U.S. It also addressed ways to keep the U.S. engaged in Asia, involve China in rulemaking, and strengthen the centrality of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The event provided valuable insights into how the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) aims to enable and enhance multilateral cooperation amid the ongoing competition between major superpowers. Furthermore, the symposium addressed the need for new rules in response to the fast-changing global environment, particularly in the areas of the digital economy and national security. The actions and policies of key players, including Australia and Japan, were discussed in relation to their vital role in shaping the future integrity and sustainability of the region.
