SIIS Roundtable

Peter Drysdale and Shiro Armstrong led a delegation from the East Asian Bureau of Economic Research (EABER) to Shanghai and Beijing for face-to-face exchanges with their counterparts in China, marking a resumption of in-person engagements after the COVID-19 pandemic. The delegation received a warm welcome and engaged in high-level meetings with esteemed institutions and organizations.

The delegation had fruitful discussions with renowned think tanks such as the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS) and the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE). They also had the opportunity to interact with representatives from influential publications like Caixin, electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, and officials from the Australian embassy. Additionally, the delegation held meetings at esteemed academic institutions including Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The delegation had the privilege of meeting Yi Gang, the Governor of the People’s Bank of China, to discuss matters related to sustainable investment and financial reform, among other important topics. They also met with Fu Ying, former Ambassador to Australia and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as the international division of the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China, with which the Australian National University (ANU) has an exchange arrangement.

These engagements provided a valuable opportunity for EABER to strengthen ties and foster collaboration with their counterparts in China. The discussions covered a wide range of topics related to economics, finance, and international relations, contributing to a deeper understanding and enhanced cooperation between the two countries.
